Sweet Melodies: John Mark McMillan

Singer-songwriter John Mark McMillan is in a class of his own when it comes to his lyrical abilities.  He has blessed the Christian community with songs like, How He Loves, Murdered Son, and Sins Are Stones, and is currently in the process of making a new album that is 100% fan funded!

I urge you to purchase his album, "The Medicine", and let it play over your radio throughout the day.  You will be encouraged by his Gospel-filled songs.

"On Friday a thief, on Sunday a King
Laid down in grief, but awoke with the Keys
Of Hell on that day, first born of the slain
The man Jesus Christ laid death in its grave!"

Good Reads: Father Fiction by Donald Miller

Donald Miller is becoming more and more popular in the literary world every day, but few know about his heart for children and the fatherless.  In 2005 he started an advocacy group for fatherless children called The Mentoring Project, and has since been able to reach out to so many children who have been hurt by their father.  This book is an extension of his heart for the fatherless.  In Father Fiction, Donald is writing of his own wounds left by his father, and the path to forgiveness that God allowed him to travel.  As with any other Donald Miller book, you will laugh, wonder, and cry at the stories he tells about his journey, and maybe you will find strength to forgive those who have hurt you as well.

Good Skills: Guitar Chalk

Bobby Kittleberger, the founder of GuitarChalk, is my best friend and a man that loves the word of God.  GuitarChalk is a Mecca for those interested in learning more than just guitar chords and solos.  Instead, it is a place you can learn your scales, various tunings, etc.  Below is an excerpt from his page.

"Last year I wrote a post titled 50 Ways to Become a Better Guitar Player that included just about every tactic I could think of about improving your guitar playing. This year, I want to do something similar, but with a little more focus and in-depth tactics that every guitar player can draw from to improve their playing and development as a musician." - Bobby Kittleberger

Also, here is a link to his youtube page if you are interested in watching him play firsthand.

Sweet Melodies: NEEDTOBREATHE

NEEDTOBREATHE

The fact that the name of this band is in all capital letters should be enough to show you that you need to check these guys out.  With a grassy roots mix of rock&roll, folk, and bluesy undertones, NEEDTOBREATHE has been a cornerstone band in my musical collection for the past four or five years.  I don't know if it's the hand and foot percussion, the experimental recording techniques, or their uncanny ability to surprise me with every song they write, but I have yet to be let down after purchasing one of their albums.  Not only are they excellent musicians, but they are very grounded individuals as well.  Last year my twin brother was in the hospital on the fringe of death for 2 weeks, and the bass player, Seth Bolt, found out about his situation through my brothers fiance and decided to write my brother a lengthy email.  This email was very encouraging to my brother (because he is OBSESSED with these guys).  Seth offered encouraging words, scriptures, and a prayer, and encouraged my brother to keep fighting the good fight.

Enjoy!

Good Reads: Gray Matter by David I. Levy, MD

Gray Matter is a thought-provoking work where Dr. Levy desperately looks to resolve the chasm between his faith and his profession.  He writes of his own experiences and emotions that took place as God brought him to his knees in surrender, but he didn't know if surrendering was worth losing all that he had gained.  Dr. Levy had literally it all.  He had money, girlfriends, a career that placed him near demigod status, but he knew there had to be more to life than these material things.  As a Jew, by heritage, Dr. Levy was not ignorant of spiritual things, instead, he knew very well what faith was all about... or at least he thought he did.  This is where he journey to finding Christ begins, and I hope you decide to pick up this book and reignite that spark of hope in yourself and in the life of your coworkers.
